Old rhythms, new contexts.
Samulnori is a contemporary Korean traditional performing art that was developed in 1978. The name of this genre literally translates to "playing of four things." These four instruments are the Janggu (hourglass-shaped drum), the Buk (barrel drum), the Jing (large gong), and the Kkwaenggwari (small gong).
Samulnori has its origins in traditional farmers' band music and shamanic music. The musical patterns and rhythms from these roots were extracted from their original contexts, reimagined, and redesigned to be performed on stage.
