Samulnori Performance

Old rhythms, new contexts.

Samulnori is a contemporary Korean traditional performing art that was developed in 1978. The name of this genre literally translates to "playing of four things." These four instruments are the Janggu (hourglass-shaped drum), the Buk (barrel drum), the Jing (large gong), and the Kkwaenggwari (small gong).

Samulnori has its origins in traditional farmers' band music and shamanic music. The musical patterns and rhythms from these roots were extracted from their original contexts, reimagined, and redesigned to be performed on stage.

Buk Performance

Hits like a wave.

Modeum Buk refers to a set of barrel drums of varying sizes, and in this captivating performance, each player skillfully plays multiple drums simultaneously. The combination of diverse rhythms creates a powerful and dynamic sound that leaves a strong impression on the audience.

The drummers stand as they play, using their whole bodies to deliver an energetic and lively performance. The intensity of the drumbeats, paired with the performers' vigorous movements, fills the venue with tension and excitement, making the show truly electrifying.
